Connecting Physical and Digital Modularity in the New Normal in K-12 Schools: A Pedagogy of Space
How might we work in interdisciplinary ways to adapt existing learning environments to provide configurable, flexible, and technology-enhanced learning spaces that promote high-quality and equitable learning experiences?

Barbara Brown Dr. Brown was born and raised in Lethbridge, Alberta and received a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Lethbridge in 1991 with a major in mathematics and minor in physical sciences. Following graduation, she started teaching grade two in Edmonton, Alberta and lived there for about 10 years. During that time she also taught junior high and was a technology consultant and school administrator. In 2000, she received a Master’s of Education degree from the University of Alberta specializing in secondary education. She taught junior high, senior high and served as district consultant and the first educational technology supervisor for the Calgary Catholic School District. In 2013, she completed doctoral studies at the University of Calgary with a focus on leadership, technology and educational change. In 2014-2015, she was awarded the final Gallagher-Galileo postdoctoral fellowship. Currently, she is Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning and director of the Partner Research Schools initiative in the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Brown's program is focused on research-practice partnerships and community engagement with an aim to advance innovations in teaching, learning, and leadership through interdisciplinary designs and online learning in K-12 and higher education contexts. Using methodologies, such as design-based research, action research and case study, her research also includes professional learning networks, professional practice standards, technology-enhanced learning environments, pedagogies and innovations in education.

Sticker price is everything. Right?
Kyna Low and Mike Bauer

Our budgets for K-12 projects, whether they are modernizations, additions, new builds or even equipment replacements, use initial construction costs to drive our decisions during design that can have on-going effects 25 to 30 year later. However, should construction costs be the key metric that we should be looking at to make the most cost-effective decision? Life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) can be a powerful cradle to grave analysis tool that can help school boards, Alberta Infrastructure and Education and other stakeholders understand the cost impacts of decisions made today for the life of a building, their systems, and materials. LCCAs can help stakeholders avoid economic surprises and reveal hidden costs before it’s too late.

Learning Objectives:
  1. What are the true costs of a building and why is this important?
  2. When should we be considering these true costs in our budgets and projects?
  3. How are LCCAs different than life-cycle assessments?
  4. How can we use LCCAs to be more confident in our decision making?
Kyna Low
Kyna is an award-winning mechanical engineer with over 14 years of experience in the design of over 20 schools across Alberta. Whether she’s researching new codes, standards or reading up on the latest innovations, Kyna is on the forefront of design trends for mechanical systems. As an advocate for sustainability and green practices, Kyna enjoys the challenge of designing mechanical systems that are optimized for energy and costs.

Mike Bauer
Mike brings over 24 years of experience as an award-winning mechanical engineer. His expertise includes the design of highly efficient mechanical systems. His most iconic project University of Calgary MacKimmie Complex Redevelopment in which the team received the 2020 CAGBC Green Building Excellence Zero Carbon Award. He is always looking at ways to improve environment quality, thermal comfort and energy efficiency in his projects. Mike understands how buildings must support our physical and mental well-being.

Designing Powerful Learning Experiences with Nature-Based Education
Kathy Worobec, Lesley Margetac and Tanya Doran

There is a growing cultural and educational movement toward nature-based education as a way to create powerful learning experiences. Outdoor learning opportunities rich in nature; can happen right in our schoolyards. Integrating purposeful design and operational strategies into the schoolyard, hard and softscapes can leverage the bricks and mortar of our schools align with sustainability education and action. These actions through the incorporation of nature-based and outdoor education improves academic achievement and educators report increased student engagement, critical thinking, and social skills. Additionally, we will review the mental and physical benefits of supporting outdoor education environments and how they are critical to curricular connection, learning outcomes and health and well-being.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Discover ideas for transitioning to green sustainable schoolyards creating healthy spaces for learning, increasing community access to green spaces and building resilience by reducing community heat and flooding while support onsite nature-based learning including ideas for planning for schoolyard gardening to create more sustainable locally/grown food- rooftop gardens, creating bioswales, etc.
  2. Learn how to incorporate design strategies for effective integration of nature-based learning, including planning spaces for 'risky play' – the urgency to address Canada's poor results of children's health and fitness.
  3. Identify funding opportunities to incorporate nature-based education.
  4. Understand the need for 'place-based' learning (building in opportunities and provocations for inquiry learning about local history, site specific 'traditional' stories and legends, connections to the land) to promote stewardship and sense of belonging and responsibility and the importance of schoolyard green spaces for this learning.

Kathy Worobec
Kathy is a Senior Education Advisor with ACEE. She brings more than 25 years of experience in environmental and energy education programs to this role. Kathy plays a lead role in our work in advancing environmental education with education leaders (school boards and curriculum development), and building capacity within the environmental education community. Kathy also delivers teacher professional development workshops and brings her many years of experience to this work.

Lesley Margetac
Lesley teaches at Horace Allen, a bronze Eco School in Coleman establishing an Eco Club and a multi-year project "Peaks to Prairies Outdoor Learning Environment,” embracing place-based forest school ethos fostering student responsibility and stewardship through regular nature connections! Lesley is co-chair of Livingstone Range School Division Professional Development Council and an ACEE board member.  She is Crowsnest Pass Community Swimming Pool Board Chair previously serving on Friends of Frank Slide Interpretive Center Board.

Tanya Doran
As the Western Canada Carbon Lead for Stantec, Tanya brings over 30 years’ green experience as a key relationship builder and client focused problem-solver; Tanya has a solid understanding of industry issues from diverse perspectives. Tanya’s past experience includes her role as Executive Director for the Alberta Chapter – Canada Green Building Council, and currently as a Director of the Alberta Council for Environmental Education, and Founding Chair for the Smart Sustainable Resilient Infrastructure Association.

Reconnecting Learning Environments with Mass Timber
Rory Koska and Andre Lema

Schools offer social spaces for students and community, these areas can be enhanced by the biophilic properties offered by wood. Andre and Rory will present scientific studies, and project examples that highlight the unique benefits of using wood in learning environments. Attendees will discover opportunities to transform the traditional school into the 21st century learning environment. By showcasing examples of low carbon, high performance, and multi-functional spaces, demonstrating what is possible in the built environment utilizing wood. Presenters Rory and Andre are builders but also heavily influenced by their partners who are both educators in grade school and post-secondary education.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Participants will have greater knowledge on how embodied carbon can be captured in a school.
  2. Participants will gain knowledge on how biophilia can benefit learners.
  3. Participants will be exposed to theoretical and actual schools built from wood.
  4. Participants will now have another option for an Alberta made solution for a post covid educational facility.
