Breaking Down Walls: Spaces for Non-Traditional Learning

A tech-heavy curriculum requires an educational environment that mirrors the industry it feeds. The Game Development & Design School offers such a setting, catering to bright and intelligent students who don't fit the mold of industrial-age education.

GDDS GDDS

Speakers:
Terry Hoyle, CEO, Pfluger Architects
Terry is the CEO of Pfluger Architects and has served North Texas educational clients for over three decades.

Brad Schilder, Principal of Game Development Design School, Burleson ISD

Learning Objectives:
  • Learn how to design educational spaces that promote individualized learning and engagement through the integration of open-concept, classroom-free environments and technology-driven design elements.
  • Understand how the integration of coding, game design, and development into the curriculum necessitated creative architectural solutions for educational and support spaces, including accommodating essential functions like dining and physical education within a classroom-free environment.
  • Explore the challenges and solutions in creating a new educational facility within an existing structure, focusing on the architectural and design strategies used to optimize space, facilitate self-paced learning, and accommodate a technology-focused curriculum.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to observe the curriculum in action.

HSW Project Planning and Design: Tailoring educational spaces to support individualized learning directly impacts student welfare by fostering an environment accommodating diverse learning needs and styles. This approach can lead to improved mental health and academic performance, demonstrating a commitment to the welfare of students by creating a supportive and adaptable learning environment.

Programming and Analysis: Integrating functions such as dining and physical education into a classroom-free environment requires thoughtful design. Creative solutions in layout and materials selection work together to remove ancillary distractions from the educational core.

Project Development and Documentation: Materials and systems design were fine-tuned to control sound and light in a completely open environment full of students. Acoustical attenuation was achieved through wall treatment, flooring selection, and soft seating. Lighting levels were precisely controlled throughout the day to maintain optimum energy levels.

North Texas Volunteer Day Helping United to Learn

Dear A4LE North Texas Chapter Members,

Let's unite to make a real difference in our community! We're thrilled to announce our inaugural North Texas Volunteer Day event in partnership with United to Learn, a remarkable education nonprofit dedicated to closing opportunity gaps in our public elementary schools.

On April 6, 2024, join us for a day of meaningful action as we rally together to support a local school campus in need of project improvements. Past half-day projects have included building outdoor learning spaces, assembling offices/desks, and refreshing playgrounds—initiatives that directly enhance the learning environment for countless children. Our organization's minimum fundraising goal is $5,000.

As members of the North Texas Chapter, we have a unique opportunity to create lasting impact through supporting and volunteering to improve the place where children learn.

Sponsorship options include:

Corporate Sponsorship:
  • $500 for 2 people
  • $1,000 for 4 people

Individual Donation:
  • $250 for 1 person
