From 6 Weeks to 6th Grade: Inspiring Curiosity in Learning Every Step of the Way
Exploring the educational journey from infancy through elementary school, this presentation highlights how learning environments and teaching methods evolve to nurture every stage of development. Beginning with the warm, play-based foundations of daycare and early childhood centers, we’ll examine how sensory exploration, social-emotional learning, and imaginative play build the groundwork for lifelong curiosity. Three unique case studies will showcase how learning can transform as children grow —from guided discovery in early childhood education to inquiry-based exploration and STEM integration in elementary grades. Irving ISD’s Baby University is a sensory environment for children 6-weeks to 3 years old, prioritizing a sense of home. Texarkana ISD’s Dunbar Early Childhood Center provides themed, immersive classrooms designed by an exhibit company, integrated with the curriculum. And Little Elm ISD’s Lakewood Village Elementary School provides a STEM-focused learning environment with ample space for hands-on learning and utilizing the building as a teaching tool. Attendees will gain insights into how early learning environments can facilitate cohesive, engaging experiences that connect early exploration with academic growth – sparking creativity to support confident, capable learners from 6 weeks to 6th grade.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand Developmental Needs Across Age Groups: Identify how learning environments evolve from infancy through elementary school, addressing cognitive, emotional, and physical needs that directly impact health, safety, and well-being.
- Explore Early Childhood Design Strategies: Examine design principles that support safe, nurturing, and engaging environments in daycare and early learning centers, including considerations for light, scale, acoustics, and sensory engagement.
- Integrate STEM and Immersive Learning Approaches: Discover how spatial design and flexible learning zones can encourage hands-on exploration, problem-solving, and collaboration through STEM-based and inquiry-driven educational models.
- Create a Seamless Educational Journey Through Design: Analyze how architecture and interior design can create continuity from early childhood settings to elementary schools—fostering familiarity, comfort, and a sense of belonging that supports long-term learning outcomes.

Northwest High School Additions and Renovations
Northwest High School, the district’s oldest campus, underwent renovation to unify its design and provide new classrooms, science labs, and upgraded technology. Previously scattered CTE programs—including health sciences, business marketing, computer science, and child development—were consolidated to strengthen community connections. A new cosmetology suite features exterior access and functions as both a learning environment and practicum shop. The library was relocated to campus center, creating a collaborative hub with open social spaces and enclosed study rooms. Adjacent student services, a learning stair, coffee bar, and convenience store promote interaction and establish a vibrant community gathering space for students, faculty, and visitors.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify design strategies used to unify and modernize an aging high school campus while maintaining operational continuity.
- Analyze how clustering Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs strengthens community identity, improves supervision, and enhances functional efficiency.
- Evaluate the design of multi-functional spaces—such as cosmetology suites, learning stairs, and student service hubs—that serve both instructional and community purposes.
- Explain how centralized learning hubs, including relocated libraries and adjacent student services, improve student engagement, safety, and collaborative learning.

A Tale of Three Schools – Redefining the Elementary Environment for Denton ISD
Denton ISD engaged in a visioning process intended to revisit how the district delivers elementary education. The result moved beyond the previous finger-plan prototype to a flexible learning environment wrapped around a hub of active, inclusive learning experiences. The design supports students in facilitating their own learning while integrating instrumental safety features. The project started as one design on three sites. Schedule-busting market conditions forced each site onto a different path— resulting in one conventionally built school (Reeves), and two built using cold-form prefabricated exterior walls (Hill and Martinez)— a first in the US. All three sites exceeded energy reduction targets using high performance strategies for energy and building systems.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the evolution of Denton ISD’s prototype design from a traditional finger plan to a flexible learning environment that is ready to support what’s now and what’s next.
- Review the challenges at each of the three sites and compare each solution for schedule, topography, and availability.
- Explain the implementation of a Prefabricated wall panel solution at two of the campuses and review the lessons learned.
- Learn how implementation of high-performance building strategies such as geothermal HVAC, envelope efficiency and solar generation directly impacts the districts bottom line.

Community Support: One Turkey at a Time

The North Texas Chapter of the Association for Learning Environments is supporting the Franklin D. Roosevelt Alumni Association Turkey Drive to help families in the Roosevelt community this holiday season. As professionals committed to creating effective learning environments, we know how deeply food insecurity affects student learning. It is difficult for a student to focus in class when they are unsure if a meal will be available at home. A4LE believes in the power of well-designed buildings, but we also understand that student success begins with meeting basic needs, and sometimes that means supporting one family, one student, and one turkey at a time.
Our Goal
We are setting a goal to provide
50 turkeys at $25 each.
We are asking our NTX members, firms, partners, and friends to help us meet this goal by
NOVEMBER 30, 2025.
How to Donate
Please send your donation using one of the following:
Cash App: $veltnation

Turkeys are being purchased through the FDR Alumni Association.
Important:
Please write “
A4LE NTX – [Your Firm Name]” in the notes to help us track contributions and recognize supporters with social media shoutouts and updates.
Together, as A4LE members and partners, we can help ensure that students and families in our learning environments experience a season of dignity, care, and community support.

Balancing Tradition and Innovation: Crafting Equitable Schools with Community at the Core
View Brochure »
The Geneva Heights Elementary School project reimagines a beloved 1931 Art Deco building in a historic neighborhood as part of a $3.5 billion bond program
aimed at creating modern, equitable educational environments. The challenge was balancing the community’s desire to preserve the historic structure with the need
for a contemporary facility. Through design charrettes, the district and design team gathered input from parents, teachers, and community members, resulting in a
plan that honors the building’s heritage while meeting modern needs.
The design preserves the original 1930s core and adds contemporary spaces for 750 PreK–5th grade students. New areas include naturally lit collaboration zones,
outdoor gardens, playgrounds, and hands-on learning spaces, organized around a central courtyard that encourages engagement. Careful site planning addressed
urban limitations, budget constraints, and phased construction to minimize disruption.
The building’s materials—brick, concrete, glazed tile, stucco, and fiber cement—connect the old and new, creating a warm, human-scale environment. Opening
in 2024 as an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Campus, Geneva Heights combines historic preservation with modern design, offering an inquiry-based
learning environment that fosters creativity, global awareness, and critical thinking.

Untangling History for a Better Future
Reimagining a 1967 High School Campus through Community Engagement and Modern Integration
The average age of a high school in Texas is 45 years old and a lot has changed since 1977, (1967 in the case of JJ Pearce High School for Richardson ISD). Multiple small additions were added throughout the 1970s, 80s and early 90s adding to academic isolation and student discontinuity throughout a 450,000sf existing high school. With second tier suburban school districts building vast new high schools, how can semi-urban school districts similar to Richardson ISD maintain equitable facilities supporting next-generational learning? Establishing an educational vision and transformational design direction is critical when transforming legacy high school campuses with the types of learning spaces today’s student need to be successful. Join us for an informative presentation and building tour highlighting interactive community and design workshops that led to flexible, collaborative and next-generational solutions.
Learning Objectives:
- Showcase the transformation from the original 1967 building through 2024.
- Identify the importance of clear wayfinding, organized planning, and school brand.
- Highlight innovative space making to supportive collaborative learning.
- Demonstrate how effective and innovative educational spaces combined with supportive furniture can reinforce future ready skills for college or career.

Crandall Middle School
The new Crandall Middle school campus marks a new chapter in this school and community. As the district envisioned the new campus, the goal was to design a “future-proof” campus by embedding flexibility and choice in the design: flexibility both in daily use and long-term adaptability. This campus was also envisioned as a place that celebrates the fine arts, and as a hub for the community. In this session we will explore the design strategies implemented in this facility to foster flexibility, to promote student collaboration, and to create opportunities to engage the community.

The 7th and 8th grade serving junior high schools would receive 6th grade to become a 6-8 grade middle school. The district hired Perkins&Will to build a new program by engaging the stakeholders and piloted the new grade alignment with Lake Highlands Junior High and Forrest Meadow Junior High. Join us to tour the newly renovated Forrest Meadow Middle School that took a building that was originally built in 1960’s and had been added on over the decades.
The existing building lacked a clear front door, line of sight into who was approaching the building, lacked wayfinding, had no access to daylight, and had outdated learning spaces.
The heart of the transformation is creating a student commons that connects the two main entries and places visible programs along this main street. The two story addition respects the single story low slung profile of the mid century building, strategically raises the roof line at the commons to bring in lots of daylight into the school. The existing library and cafeteria was opened up to bring visibility and daylight into these spaces. The outdoor spaces were enhanced to extend the student commons into secure outdoor spaces.
The walking tour at the end of the short presentation will allow the attendees to experience the change created in the school that welcomes the community and has created a place that proudly welcomes the students and staff everyday.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify potential phasing required to build on an occupied campus and the considerations for occupant safety.
- Explain how renovating an existing facility can add value to a school district and is a more sustainable solution than building new or demolishing an existing asset.
- Describe the challenge of complex renovation project on an occupied campus.
- Learn factors to consider while adding a new grade level to an existing building.

Breaking Down Walls: Spaces for Non-Traditional Learning
A tech-heavy curriculum requires an educational environment that mirrors the industry it feeds. The Game Development & Design School offers such a setting, catering to bright and intelligent students who don't fit the mold of industrial-age education.
Speakers:
Terry Hoyle, CEO, Pfluger Architects
Terry is the CEO of Pfluger Architects and has served North Texas educational clients for over three decades.
Brad Schilder, Principal of Game Development Design School, Burleson ISD
Learning Objectives:
- Learn how to design educational spaces that promote individualized learning and engagement through the integration of open-concept, classroom-free environments and technology-driven design elements.
- Understand how the integration of coding, game design, and development into the curriculum necessitated creative architectural solutions for educational and support spaces, including accommodating essential functions like dining and physical education within a classroom-free environment.
- Explore the challenges and solutions in creating a new educational facility within an existing structure, focusing on the architectural and design strategies used to optimize space, facilitate self-paced learning, and accommodate a technology-focused curriculum.
- Participants will have the opportunity to observe the curriculum in action.
HSW Project Planning and Design: Tailoring educational spaces to support individualized learning directly impacts student welfare by fostering an environment accommodating diverse learning needs and styles. This approach can lead to improved mental health and academic performance, demonstrating a commitment to the welfare of students by creating a supportive and adaptable learning environment.
Programming and Analysis: Integrating functions such as dining and physical education into a classroom-free environment requires thoughtful design. Creative solutions in layout and materials selection work together to remove ancillary distractions from the educational core.
Project Development and Documentation: Materials and systems design were fine-tuned to control sound and light in a completely open environment full of students. Acoustical attenuation was achieved through wall treatment, flooring selection, and soft seating. Lighting levels were precisely controlled throughout the day to maintain optimum energy levels.

This session will highlight opportunities that arise when centralizing administration in a large district, requiring well planned change-management and workplace strategies, as well as practical challenges with construction and phasing within a complex existing facility. The interior of a five-story building was gutted to allow for an open-concept design which facilitates innovation between departments, minimizing isolated offices. The needs of each department were met without losing the vision of unity and collaboration. The health and wellbeing of all employees and the community is elevated by the design quality, with careful attention to bring natural light deep in the building.
Learning Objectives:
- Discover opportunities that arise when centralizing administration in a large district.
- Learn change-management and workplace strategy concepts and implementation.
- Gain strategies to respond to challenges with construction and phasing within a complex existing facility.
- Learn how to respond strategically to continued input and requested changes during design and construction, requiring agility and design flexibility.

Beyond Classrooms: How Frisco ISD is Evolving its Elementary Education
Educational facility design goals are often developed to support and align with an organization’s teaching and learning strategies. Since these methods evolve over time, strategic reassessment of project goals defined during the planning stage of a multi-year bond program are sometime necessary to ensure that projects delivered toward the end of a bond program reflect the current state of aspirations desired for student outcomes.
This presentation will explore how a planned re-site elementary school project sought to incorporate evolving teaching and learning practices and how an interactive planning process resulted in a reimagined school design centered on genuine student learning experiences. The spatial layout is highly flexible, accommodating daily adaptations with varying sized spaces supporting different size learner group arrangements. Minett Elementary School’s organization of learning spaces works in partnership with innovative curriculum to produce results defined by Frisco ISD’s future ready profile for learners.

Advocacy for student performing arts has driven a radical update to the Education Specification implemented by Dallas ISD. DISD’s vision to become the best urban District in the United States places Fine Arts at the forefront. The vision is built on increased student participation in extracurricular activities such as Fine Arts. As the former Director of Theatre and Dance for Dallas ISD, Rachel Harrah has championed an extensive effort to enhance Theatre and Dance programs and develop consistent high standards for facilities across the District.
Previously, the Bryan Adams High School theater program inhabited an oversized portable building. The staff and students creatively transformed the portable to function in a vastly undersized and underequipped space. As part of a new addition and renovation, the theatre program will be moving into a new state-of-the-art 3,500 SF black box, a fully functional costume studio, and new scene shop. The design of these spaces provided a new design paradigm and lessons learned in the development of new theatre educational specifications for the District. Come learn what’s new in Theater Design and why it matters for students.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify needs of a performing arts program like theatre.
- Derive lessons learned from a significant overhaul of Education Specifications driven by motivated administration and skilled design-professionals.
- Investigate possible outcomes and challenges for a performing arts program in a new facility.
- Evaluate the process of developing and implementing a new design paradigm for programs in Dallas ISD.

How Professional Development Can Shape a Building Before the Doors Ever Open
Before teachers design a lesson, they map out their plans, master the content and deliver instruction in a way that best meets their student’s needs. During the planning and design phase of this campus, much attention was given to making sure that spaces were built to support the educational delivery needs of the district both now, and for years to come. Through a collaborative professional development program, we were able to prepare educators for their new space before the doors ever opened, and allowed their voices to inform the design.
Learning Objectives:
- Allow culture and instruction to inform design
- Understanding the educational delivery needs for teachers
- Discuss how the learning experience is maximized through professional development
- Show how proper professional development creates a smoother transition to a new building

Planning for the Careers of the Future
Lewisville ISD | TECC-W Technology, Exploration & Career Center West
Most of the jobs today’s students will encounter upon graduation do not exist yet. The opportunity of having many diverse careers under one roof lies at the fringes, at the intersection of where one program bleads into other. The synergies that can happen from these diverse programs collaborating with each other forecast the future jobs these students will encounter upon graduation. The design of TECC-W fosters these collaborations, and in doing so, broadens the interests and expertise of its students. This presentation will focus on the strategies LISD and the design team used to foster this collaboration.
Learning Objectives:
- Discover organizational strategies that created efficiencies and allowed for more collaboration spaces for students
- Explore different techniques to ensure shops and classrooms can coexist successfully in one facility.
- Analyze how the furniture plays a key role in the educational success of the learners

Challenges and Opportunities of Integrating your High School Students on a College Campus
While many school districts have partnerships with Community Colleges, few have their students on the college campus for classes. Allen ISD’s agreement with Collin College allows Allen High School students to take college classes on a college campus while they are still completing high school. This partnership provides the high school students with career technical certification opportunities and eliminates barriers to achieving higher education. Join us to learn about the facility implications of this decision from Allen ISD and Collin College: how the project was planned and designed to create separation and integration of these two programs in one building.
