Tour & Dinner Presentation

Evergreen High School

Thursday, May 21, 2026
Tour: 4:30 – 5:30 pm PT
Dinner/Presentation: 6:00 – 8:00 pm PT

The story of Evergreen High School begins with an understanding of place. The design draws inspiration from the site’s layered history—the glaciation that shaped the region, the historic watercourse that once cut through the land, and the current generation of towering conifers. Each element informs the planning and form of the school, creating a deep connection between natural systems and the built environment. The campus responds to a significant site challenge: a large sewer easement bisecting the property. This constraint shaped the placement and configuration of the building, but also reinforced the design’s narrative of resilience, flow, and regeneration. The new high school is a welcoming, safe, and culturally responsive community that embraces its bucolic setting while serving the diverse needs of students and families. On the exterior, the building evokes the solidity of rock carved by glaciers, with two primary masses separated to allow the watercourse’s path to symbolically continue between them. Inside, Cross-Laminated Timber celebrates the legacy of the Pacific Northwest Forest while embodying sustainable design and materiality. Together, these elements create a building that is both rooted in place and forward-looking, expressing strength, warmth, and environmental responsibility. Evergreen High School is more than a replacement facility—it is a living expression of the land’s past, present, and future. Through careful integration of natural systems, cultural identity, and sustainable practices, the school stands as a beacon for its community: a place of learning, belonging, and renewal.

Learning Objectives:
  • Understand how Evergreen High School’s design draws inspiration from glacial landforms, watercourses, and forests to root the school in its natural and cultural context.
  • Examine how a major site constraint—a bisecting sewer easement—was transformed into an organizing principle that shaped building placement, circulation, and resilience.
  • Explore how massing, experiential graphics, and cross-laminated timber convey narrative, support wayfinding, and promote health, safety, and well-being.
  • Evaluate how sustainable strategies and cultural identity are integrated to create a safe, welcoming campus that serves as a beacon for its community.
