10:30 – 11:30 AM Session #1: Education Standards for ISC
In 2021 and 2023, Indigenous Services Canada in collaboration with the Assembly of First Nations have updated the policies and standards for determining new school space. The new allocations include space for language and culture rooms knowledge keeper space, counselling/wellness space, outdoor learning areas, inclusive education, and community and emergency considerations. New policies promote the development of education specifications that tie learning environments to languages, cultures, pedagogy and curriculum specific to First Nation communities.

Faye Strong
Faye is an accredited learning environment planner and a certified gold seal construction manager. She currently works for Indigenous Services Canada, National Capital Region, Regional Infrastructure Delivery Branch, on policies, standards and reviews of Education Facilities. Her past work experience includes the pre-design, design and construction management of First Nation Learning Environments. A key part of her work is to understand the connections between learning environments and “Indigenous Ways of Knowing”. Within A4LE Faye has served on the Alberta Chapter board/executive, and as the Canadian JEDI champion.

10:30 – 11:30 AM Session #2: Acoustical Opportunities for Learning Environments
Most will generally agree that acoustics, noise, and vibration impact our everyday lives. Speech privacy and speech intelligibility are key functions for many of our work and home environments. This session will provide an overview on the basics of acoustics and building vibration, and why you should consider it early in the design process. Interior fit-out challenges, building noise/vibration conundrums, loud talkers, and more. Several examples of acoustical construction challenges will be presented, including why it is important to pay attention to the details.

Learning Objectives:
  • Learn basic acoustic terminology.
  • How to improve speech intelligibility?
  • Details to enforce in demising wall construction.
  • Is an STC rating a sufficient requirement?

Ian Bonsma, HGC Engineering
Ian has more than 19 years of experience in noise, vibration, and acoustics engineering consulting. His responsibilities cover a wide variety of projects including architectural acoustical design of buildings (acoustical privacy, speech intelligibility), environmental noise, and ground-borne vibration. Recent work has focused on the analysis and design of noise and vibration control for building services as well as architectural acoustic design for commercial and institutional spaces that include acoustic optimization, speech intelligibility and privacy solutions.

1:00 – 2:00 PM Session #1: Beyond the Scope: How to Wrap Around Community
Paul Blaser

In 2019, RBM Architecture was hired by the Metis Organisation Camponi Housing / SaskNative Rentals to undertake the development of and entire Community. At first blush, it was a new affordable housing project with 6 buildings and 168 affordable Housing units.

But through the bottom-up process, the project became so much more than just housing. The project became a way to “Wrap Around” the needs that the community would generate, and meet those needs in intentional and caring ways.

This presentation will look at how to lift up the secondary and tertiary needs identified by communities in the design process and bring everyone together, including:
  • How to change the conversation from “Why we can’t” to “How we can”
  • How to overcome the naysayers who say “We can’t afford that”
  • Build new partnership and broaden the circle without losing track of the core
  • Stack funding to accomplish what’s needed
  • Keep the Project moving forward from Conception to construction

We will also show how this process applies to schools and in particular schools that are embedded in their communities such as First Nations to care for the whole child, the family and the community with “Wrap Around” solutions.

2:15 – 3:30 PM General Session: Australasia Global Connection “21st Century Schools to Promote Digital and Student Centric Learning”

Daniel Smith, Leaf Architecture + Deb O’Riley, Australasia Director

Deb O’Riley
Deb O’Riley Deb is an Education Consultant for Learning Space Design - previously Director, New Schools, for the Department for Education, South Australia (2015 – 2022). Deb is an enthusiastic and passionate educator with a real commitment to improving outcomes for all learners. She has held teaching, principal and other leadership roles in a variety of schools and education settings in South Australia. Deb has previously held the position of Chair for Learning Environments Australasia (LEA) and currently holds the position of International Director for LEA. This position is an international board position for the association and represents Australasia.

Deb’s focus has been to understand elements critical to the successful delivery of contemporary learning environments. Deb believes that learning environments need to encourage and promote multiple modalities of learning and support contemporary pedagogy. A collaborative process with all stakeholders is critical to the success of the learning spaces.

Deb has led teams to create inclusive learning environments where physical and social elements continuously evolve and teaching and learning is enacted with energy and imagination.

Deb draws on her past experience and knowledge as a teacher and principal to assist in the creation of new learning spaces. Deb understands the importance of integrated learning landscapes – where learning opportunities are enhanced with greater connectivity between formal and informal spaces as well as effective outdoor and indoor linkages. She collaboratively works with stakeholders to develop an understanding of how learning spaces could be designed to support a range of learning activities required as well as to enable innovative practices and seamlessly support IT/AV technologies. Consideration needs to be given to enable ease of movement and spaces need to be readily adaptable to accommodate variation of class size and disciplinary and interdisciplinary content.

As Director of the Botanic High School project, Deb has presented and showcased this school at national and international conferences. This includes conferences and workshops in Singapore, USA, Brisbane and Perth.
