The Impact of the Acoustical Learning Environment – A Focus on Acoustics in Early Stage Design for Improved Student Learning and Accessibility
View Presentation » View Reference List »

The acoustical environment has an impact on student learning. This presentation focuses on architectural acoustics and mechanical noise control in early stage design for improved student learning and accessibility. Research in the area of acoustics and student learning as well as international/local school acoustical standards will be discussed. Further, design strategies for achieving excellent acoustics in schools will be provided, including examples from existing Alberta schools. This presentation was developed and will be presented by an Acoustical Engineer and Educational Audiologist.

Learning Objectives:
  • Early Design in School Construction Projects.
  • Research in student learning and accessibility.
  • Discussion of local and international standards including LEED.
  • Architectural design strategies for achieving excellent acoustics in schools.

Core Competency: Educational Facility Pre-Design Planning
Manages a master planning process that combines educational planning, facilities assessment and utilization, demographic research, capital planning and educational specifications with a community-based vision to establish a plan for learning environments. This includes the ability to translate existing or aspirational instructional models to specific programming and spatial relationships.

Ellen Buchan P.Eng., Alberta Infrastructure
Ellen is a member of the Technical Services Branch with Alberta Infrastructure. As an Acoustical Engineer that has spanned almost 20 years in this field, Ellen is involved in the acoustical design of a diverse range of buildings. She is responsible for providing design guidance, detailed design on specialized projects, developing design standards and assessing building performance. After graduating from Mechanical Engineering in 2003, Ellen joined Alberta Infrastructure’s Acoustics Group as part of a team of Acoustical Specialists primarily focused on the acoustical considerations in the field of building science for the Province’s rapidly expanding infrastructure, affording her an opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of building projects, such as, health care facilities, schools, post-secondary institutions, correctional centers, museums and courthouses, all having unique acoustical challenges. Through additional education and the opportunity to work with experienced professionals, an interest in acoustics was allowed to flourish. Ellen’s expertise has come to include areas such as Architectural Acoustics, Structural Acoustics, Mechanical Noise and A/V Technology. She has made many presentations on a variety Acoustical Engineering topics to the Acoustical Society of America, Canadian Society of Acoustics and Alberta Provincial Government Ministries/Organizations.

Sarah Burns, M.S.; R-Aud
Sarah is an Educational Audiologist who has worked in throughout northern Alberta. She provided educational audiology services to most school districts as part of service teams that worked with students who had hearing learning challenges. Always a team player she worked closely with educators, teachers or the deaf and hard of hearing and other disciplines to improve outcomes for all students. Highlighting the impacts of classroom environmental acoustics has on all children learning has been a professional passion for her. Over the past 6 years, Sarah has worked with the Alberta Education Low-Incidence Team supporting individuals working or entering into this rewarding field.

Achieving Net Zero Carbon Schools in Alberta
Buildings are rapidly becoming a primary topic of discussion when it comes to climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions within Canada. Alberta has specific challenges when it come to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in buildings that may prompt the question – are zero carbon emissions schools possible in Alberta? This session will focus on how to achieve Net Zero Carbon Schools in Alberta's specific scenario. This will include cold climate considerations, electricity grid challenges, and building specific strategies that can be used to achieve a net zero carbon goal. Project specific examples will be shared, as well as a case study completed to show what measures impact school energy performance and greenhouse gas emissions the most. This will layout a roadmap of the process for evaluating zero carbon schools in Alberta and how to implement them. Attendees will learn the definitions involved in zero carbon buildings and will learn the challenges and solutions of producing these projects within Alberta.

Learning Objectives:
  • How to implement net zero carbon schools in Alberta.
  • Key metrics relating to net zero carbon buildings.
  • What the architectural impacts are of net zero carbon schools.
  • How material selection factors into net zero carbon buildings.

Core Competency: Design of Educational Facilities
Acts as a resource to the design team in providing ongoing guidance and support to ensure that the emerging and ultimate design aligns with the established community vision, education goals, future programming, written design standards, best/next practices and education policy.

Planning for Evolving Communities
Learning environments and education programing change as demographics of communities evolve. Facilities adapt to the vision of new stakeholders, recognizing culture, and supporting progressive education programing. This workshop will review strategies to: Research population – participants will review questions about their own community demographics. Methods to collect, research, and analyze demographic data will be shared. Engage community stakeholders – each table will participate in a brief engagement to identify activities and spaces that support students within a learning environment. This activity will be used to demonstrate how the vision and culture of a community may be documented. Gather information on support services and education programing – an educator will lead a discussion on curriculum (what is taught) and pedagogy (how it is taught) within their classroom. Tables will have 3 minutes to discuss how they can support that educator. An example of how education programing affects the layout of facilities will be shown. The workshop will conclude with examples of how education specifications can document populations, vision, culture, and education programing. The scope of work is identified in the workshop is a part of the new the standards set for consultants when working on Federally funded school facilities.

Learning Objectives:
  • Research strategies to identify how growth and change will impact evolving learning communities.
  • Example of gathering information on how to engage students, families and communities in developing healthy learning environments.
  • Documenting education programing, pedagogy and inclusive service that support the success of students.
  • Compiling information into a study.

Core Competency: Educational Facility Pre-Design Planning
Manages a master planning process that combines educational planning, facilities assessment and utilization, demographic research, capital planning and educational specifications with a community-based vision to establish a plan for learning environments. Faye Strong, School Facility Planner, Indigenous Services, Canada
Faye is an Accredited Learning Environment Planner through A4LE, and GSC Owner's Construction Manager through CCA. In her work with Indigenous Services Canada, Faye engages stakeholders to understand educational requirements. She reviews and researches the education programs to ensure that recommendations and infrastructure will meet the needs of students, families, community, and staff members. Consultations with Educators, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Language and Cultural Instructors are an essential part of Faye’s planning process. Creating a plan that the community will own and sustain is her key objective on every project.
