Uniting Communities, Bridging the Divide

2023-24 Theme – Uniting Communities, Bridging the Divide

“Education is all a matter of building bridges.” ~ Ralph Ellison

In alignment with the A4LE purpose to strengthen learning for all through better environments and in support of its mission as an interdisciplinary association of professionals working at the intersection of learning and place to drive the evolution of learning environments, the Virginia Chapter is excited to promote this work by offering programs that highlight leading research, practices and innovations in education design and construction.

This year’s theme, Uniting Communities, Bridging the Divide, builds on previous years’ efforts that highlighted Re-Imagining Learning Spaces, Creating FLUID Educational Spaces, and Building Bridges, Creating Connections. A common thread throughout each of these is the idea that change, adaptability and innovation help to strengthen connections and bridge divides among people and communities.

An unknown author once said, “Bridges are symbols of connection and unity, reminding us that no matter how great the divide, we can find a way to come together.” Understanding the importance of relationships, we continue to focus efforts on using connections to bring communities and resources together to bridge the divides that often exist in educational settings. It is our hope that through our work we are able to facilitate the sharing of ideas that provide opportunities to strengthen connections to enhance learning for all people.

Please save the date for the following events – you will not want to miss them!

Give Back Initiative

Our Virginia Chapter wants to ask our membership to consider how we can help support children that are experiencing homelessness in the midst of the pandemic and having to learn remotely. In speaking with Nicole Lee-Mwandha, the Homeless Education State Coordinator, we learned that some of the best ways we can assist is to give both funding and support to resources that help these students be successful. In the DC market specifically there are two links below you could reach out to – One is for primary students (Bright Beginnings) and the other is for the youth (Sasha Bruce). Or if you’d prefer to support your local homeless shelters please consider doing so. Your assistance will make such a difference!!
