2015 Pacific Northwest Region Exhibit of School Planning & Design

Introduction
The Exhibit of School Planning & Design offers Owner/Design teams in our region an opportunity to share their outstanding work with our community. The awards provide recognition to the most outstanding projects presented each year.

Eligibility of Projects

Qualifications:
  • Educational facilities that include early childhood learning environments (including Head Start); public, private, and parochial elementary, middle/junior high, and high schools; alternative schools (i.e., charter schools, magnet schools, vocational/technical schools, and at-risk schools); and other innovative learning centers (i.e., museum schools, environmental learning centers, and high-tech learning environments).
  • Projects may include new construction, additions, and renovations/modernizations.
  • Master plans, including multiple sites and/or multiple phases, are eligible.
  • Submissions of conceptual or in-design projects are encouraged for exhibit; however, hypothetical or projects not yet complete are NOT eligible for the Pinnacle Award.
  • Projects completed within the past two years are eligible for the awards programs.
  • Projects will not be accepted from firms or school districts affiliated with a jury member.

Scoring Criteria:
A distinguished jury representing both design and educational professionals will review entries. They will have sole discretion in selecting entries that best represent exemplary practice in educational facilities design and planning. All awards or other special recognition will be awarded at their discretion. All decisions are final.

The jury reviews projects based on the following criteria:
  • Community Environment
  • Physical Environment
  • Learning Environment
  • Grace Under Pressure

Recognition and Publication
Submitted projects will be displayed at the 2015 Pacific Northwest Region Annual Conference and Exposition in Vancouver, BC, June 18-20, 2015. The winners will be publicized to the regional media, the regional newsletter and showcased on A4LE's website.

The 2015 Jury
A distinguished jury representing both design and educational professionals will review entries. They will have sole discretion in selecting entries that best represent exemplary practice in educational facilities design and planning. All awards or other special recognition will be awarded at their discretion. All decisions are final.

Entry Specifications

Submittal Form
All entrants need to register online, provide a photograph release form, payment AND the electronic data by June 1, 2015.

Electronic Data
All entries shall be submitted in electronic form for use in any publications for the awards and for review by the Jury. Please include the following files, each with graphic scale and title:

  • Signature Photo – 10" wide landscape layout, preferably in color, graphic scale not required.
  • Building Photos or Graphics – can submit up to 8 addition photos (exterior photos, interior photos, concept graphics, perspectives, models, etc.).
  • Floor Plan – Base floor plan with site plan background; indicate section cut and exterior elevation, with appropriate room titles, color, grayscale, or black and white line art.
  • Building Section – Include room titles, color, grayscale, or black and white line art.
  • Exterior Building Elevation – color, grayscale, or black and white line art.
  • Written synopsis of the project – 200 word maximum.
  • Project Narrative – An electronic file, in MSWord, of the narrative as described below (under the Board Requirements and Project Narrative section). This document will not be published in the Program Booklet, but will be used in the review by the jury.
  • Signed photo release form

Please submit all electronic files as PDF files via email (if less than 10 MB per file and/or per email) to: [email protected], OR, via electronic file sharing platforms (e.g. Hightail, or Dropbox), OR, using an FTP site.

If you chose to use an FTP site, you are responsible to create a new folder with your firm name and send e-mail notification to [email protected]. If you are submitting more than one project, please create a sub-folder for each project.

All electronic submissions must be received in full by June 1, 2015.

Presentation Boards
All project entries will be exhibited on 20” X 20” eco- board (or other suitable rigid, light-weight material), with each school building or project presented on not more than four boards.

Boards will be mounted using “Velcro” attachments to exhibit frames. Please attach (or include in package) sticky-backed Velcro strips in 2” lengths (hook side only) for each corner of each panel. For multiple board displays, include a graphic key indicating order and desired placement of boards.

The presentation boards should meet the following criteria:

Project Data:
Text should be large enough for exhibit viewing and kept simple. The following data should be clearly described for each project submitted:

  • Name and location of school
  • Name of Owner (school district or institution)
  • Name of Architect, and other appropriate design team members including, but not limited to: educational consultants, engineering consultants (mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, technology, etc.), other specialist(s), contractor, project manager, etc.

Board Requirements and Project Narrative: Teams are encouraged to submit boards for the exhibit that most accurately represent the work (architecture, engineering, technology, materials, products, construction, etc.). However, to be eligible for consideration for The Pinnacle Award, the following minimum submission parameters must be met:

  • Illustrative floor plan(s) and/or site plan(s) that accurately convey program intent and elements
  • At least one image (photograph, perspective, or sectional drawing) that conveys the spatial relationships of the education program space(s)
  • Project narrative, using minimum 11 point size Arial font, and must at minimum include:
  • Header with project name matching project name on main board
  • Describe the clients’ goals and program, and how the design solution meets the goals
  • Describe how the project contributed and responded to the unique nature of its surrounding community
  • Describe the features of the project that enhance the ability of the planet to support all life.
  • Describe how the facility can easily adapt to changing education delivery

Project data, with the following minimum information:

  • Provide the area and construction cost for the entire project. All site work and site development costs must be given, but may be separated out from the building costs. Remodel projects should appropriately describe separate areas and costs for additions and modernized spaces
  • Names of consultants including, but not limited to: educational consultants, engineering (mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, technology, etc.), or any other specialist(s) when applicable
  • Name of general contractor
  • Names of major material suppliers (in particular A4LE industry partners)

Delivery of Boards

Packing & Shipping
Shipped boards must be received by June 17, 2015, to ensure their inclusion in the Exhibit. Please be aware that shipping and material handling fees may apply.

  • You may send the boards in advance, or bring them with you to the conference.
  • If you send boards, the shipping package need to be durable, constructed of suitable rigid material. Exhibit panels should be shipped directly to the Exhibition Coordinator of the Regional Conference for that year.
  • Shipped boards must be received by day before the conference starts to ensure their inclusion in the Exhibit.
  • If you plan to hand deliver your boards, please send written e-mail notification to Donna Robinson at [email protected] two weeks in advance of the conference. 

Supervision & Services
The British Columbia Chapter of A4LE reserves the right to assign exhibit space and to withhold from exhibition entries deemed to be unsuitable for display. No special lighting system will be provided or permitted.

Collection and Disposal of Materials
Exhibitors are responsible for collecting their submittal boards at the end of the conference. Any boards not collected by 10:00 pm June 20, 2015, may be disposed of.

Participant Notice
Participants are reminded that these are exhibitions of school architecture and not a commercial display. Personal solicitation or distribution of literature in conjunction with the Design Exhibit is prohibited.
