Presentation #5: Next Century Learning: How can We Prepare Learners for an Unknown Future

Presentation of Next Century education by Meg Parsons, AIA, NCARB, REFP, LEED of
Cuningham Group in Minneapolis. The presentation will explore current and future
trends in education and how we can prepare learners for an unknown future.
- Participants will be introduced to current and future trends in school design,
including discussion of the importance of thinking beyond what we know.
Topics participants will learn about include community and business
partnerships, special needs students, health and wellness and mind/body
connection in education, among others.
- Participants will learn how the design of small learning communities within
middle schools and high schools are affecting educational outcomes and
how educators are utilizing these facilities.
- Participants will learn about trends in learning that have environmental
implications and how learning and environments are linked.
- Participants will understand what others in educational design are doing
through examples

Presentation of the programming and planning process for the Gladys Wood
Elementary School Renovation. 1970’s era school updated with complete interior
remodel and addition. School tour following presentation.
- Participants will learn how internal reconfigurations were achieved to meet
the school program and current Educational Specifications.
- Participants will learn of the improvements to the building, including seismic
upgrades, thermal envelope upgrades and acoustic control improvements
due to eliminating the “open classroom” concept original to the 1970's era
construction.
- Participants will learn of the phasing and CMGC process to keep the school
open while under construction.
- Participants will learn of the school branding / learning signature cultivated by
the design team and BDC (building design committee) used to help inform
design and planning decisions.

Presentation #6: Introduction to ASHRAE 90.1-2013

Overview of ASHRAE 90.1, including the envelope, lighting and HVAC requirements of
the energy code. History of the code and application of the code to save energy.
Integrated design is emphasized.
- Participants will learn of several updates to the Lighting and Building Envelope
sections of the 2013 Standard.
- Participants will identify the HVAC portion of some of the more than 100
updated requirements from previous versions of the standard.
- Participants will be introduced to techniques for achieving 30% or more
energy savings from Std 90.1-2004 requirements.
- Participants will explore ways to improve system energy performance in
buildings.

movable. Participants will learn how furniture is being used in the classroom to
promote small group and project focused learning along with traditional
lecture arrangements.
- Participants will learn how interior environments, furniture and equipment are
currently being used to improve educational settings for students with special
needs.
- Participants will be introduced to how lighting, colors, textures, materials within
the classroom affect students ability to learn and focus

Presentation #8: Acoustic Design in Schools

This seminar focuses on the fundamental physics of acoustic performance, how these
performances translate to good design for core learning and support spaces and
discusses the on-going research that is improving acoustics in existing and future
buildings. This includes audio examples of acoustic performances and interactive
demonstrations on how sound works. The seminar reviews the importance and
context of existing criteria and best practices.
Explain the key acoustic design conditions for core learning and educational
spaces.
Explore how the learning, hearing, and sound works that explains how sound
distractions effective students and teachers.
Describe the difference between materials and assemblies that absorb sound
from those that block sound transmission.
Understand the opportunities and challenges in balancing acoustic design

Presentation #9a: Energizing Students, How to Make Students Part of the Process

In this interactive session, participants will delve into the details of how to engage
educators and students in their built environment, focusing on using the school
building as a living laboratory and creating advocates for sustainability initiatives and smart energy use in schools. Participants will have fun with grade level appropriate K-
12 hands-on activities they can share with educators and explore expectations and
needs that educators face in integrating lessons into their classrooms. Participants will
have a chance to share their experiences (positive and negative) interfacing with
educators and students, and the class will brainstorm ideas for overcoming identified
barriers.
- Participants will develop a plan of action for integrating educators and
students into future projects.
- Participants will identify barriers and solutions to barriers to integrating
educators and students into future projects.
- Participants will explore how to talk to K-12 students and experience grade
level appropriate lessons to share with educators.
- Participants will discuss how educators can incorporate building lessons into
their classrooms while meeting their curriculum expectations.

youth and adults to develop a sustainable social enterprise business, ensuring that our
community will grow strong and vibrant for generations to come. With caring they
encourage youth to actively explore their values and goals, and to pursue them with
enthusiasm, caring, and commitment. With balance, they prioritize between different
aspects of life, including: Innovation and Tradition, Work and Play, Purpose and Profit.
- Participants will learn how to engage youth in a unique learning environment
through a hydroponic greenhouse.
- Participants will learn how to teach both “soft skills” and more specific skills
(data collection and analysis, process improvement, etc.) through this setting.
- Participants will learn how this hydroponic system can be scaled to different
environments including rural Alaska.
- Participants will learn about the environmental/sustainability benefits of local
hydroponic production.

Presentation #10a: Anchorage Stream Academy – School with a Future
Garrett Burtner, Adam Mokelke
Public charter schools provide unique options to learners and face unique
operational and facilities challenges. Now in its third year, Anchorage Stream
Academy is one of the newest charter schools in the Anchorage School District. In
this session Stream principal, Adam Mokelke, will share the vision for this 6-8 middle
school, which has roots in STEM education and is branching out into outdoor
expeditionary learning. Mokelke will explore how location and school building factor
into fulfilling the educational mission and how charter schools seek to overcome the
limitations often imposed by lack of purpose-built facilities. The session will also include
a reporting out from the Stream Schools Next team “Rapid Current” that competed
regionally in 2018 with their student design for a distributed outdoor learning campus.
- Learn about a new public charter school option in Anchorage, serving grades
6-8. Also, understand the process by which charters are founded in the
Anchorage School District and the challenges and opportunities they face.
- Learn about Stream Academy’s unique approach to curriculum that
incorporates outdoor experiential learning into a STEM model.
- Consider and discuss the unique facility needs of charters and the options
available to house them including development methods for building new or
renovating existing facilities.
- Learn how A4LE’s Schools Next design competition can supplement and
enhance learning for middle school students.
