Few professions were upended by the past two years as much as teachers. After immediate school shutdowns and social distancing, educators grappled with enduring inequities in technology and glaring learning gaps. For an already strained profession, the pressure to keep up with accelerated shifts in pedagogy, technology, and expectations came with relatively little progress in the support available to them.

Revisiting Corgan’s 2019 survey on what teachers need from school design, Design Lessons from Teachers 2.0 surveys 1,000 K-12 teachers from across the nation to explore the impact of the built environment on teacher experience, performance, and satisfaction.

Listen in as design researchers Melissa Hoelting from Hugo, Corgan’s internal research and innovations team, and Chloe Hosid from Corgan’s education studio share the top design lessons from teachers and how data-driven insights combined with practical interventions can activate the campus as a powerful tool to support teachers, improve retention, and empower students.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Learn what the teachers identified as their needs for their physical and virtual work environments.
  2. Gain insight into how existing environments can be improved.
  3. Understand the role flexibility and the classroom play in promoting new learning models.
  4. Analyze how the design of schools can better support teacher retention and overall safety.

Speakers:

Melissa Hoelting, Assoc. AIA, WELL AP, Design Researcher

Chloe Hosid, M.SC., Education Design Researcher
