Tour attendees will experience the new North Eugene High School (construction completion February 2023) situated on 10-acre site recently occupied by an elementary school and adjacent to the existing high school to the east. This high-quality, student-centered, next-generation learning environment and community-centric facility is designed to help students achieve academic success; provide a warm and inviting destination for its diverse, inclusive and forward-thinking community; and create a vibrant, dynamic learning environment and strong source of student and community pride.

North Eugene High School

The design is inspired by the strong, inclusive nature of North Eugene’s diverse community and manifest in the building’s organizational concept in the form of a clear, efficient 2-story “ring” encompassing a central courtyard that will serve as the communal heart of the school and community.

Career Technical Education is a central focus of the NEHS curriculum including Wood & Metal Shops, Culinary Arts, Health Sciences, Early Childhood Learning and Digital Media. These programs are intermixed and integrated with other academic and arts-focused programs and informal learning spaces throughout the building to encourage collaboration, discovery, and a cross-disciplinary mix of pedagogies, subjects, and ideas amongst students and teachers.

The building’s massing takes cues from the surrounding neighborhood’s low-slung mid-century modern residential character by incorporating long, gently sloping roofs that visually reduce the scale of the building while smoothly transitioning between adjacent large volume spaces of the gyms, theater and Commons into a unified massing.

NEHS’s interior design is envisioned as a warm and inviting environment for learning and community engagement. The courtyard scheme ensures an efficient organization of spaces and clear wayfinding, important considerations for class schedules that demand quick transitions between class periods. The large courtyard, ringed with double-loaded classroom corridors, ensures that all occupied spaces will have access to daylight and views critical to providing a healthy learning environment.

Learning Objectives:
  • Understand the importance of effective internal and external wayfinding and efficient circulation as an organizational, programmatic, educational and social driver for the design of K-12 environments.
  • Learn about the design team’s thoughtful and opportunistic integration of warm and inviting informal learning spaces throughout the building within the constraints of a tight budget and stringent programmatic requirements.
  • Understand the effectiveness of thoughtful massing and exterior material composition to visually integrate large-scale school facilities into low-scale, single-family residential neighborhoods.
  • Learn about the design’s purposeful placement of program relative to site adjacencies, public access, safety and security to encourage community use during evenings and weekend.
