The Canby high school classroom addition demonstrates how a thoughtfully planned expansion can reinvigorate an existing campus by enhancing educational program while addressing longstanding community concerns. The tour will examine how the programming and siting of the addition creates indoor and outdoor community gathering spaces, how connections to the existing building improve access and wayfinding, and how the design of learning spaces provides new opportunity for flexibility, collaboration, and outdoor learning. The tour will also examine the challenges of connecting to existing structures that were constructed over various eras since 1929.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify how exterior and interior spaces can be designed to support an educational community using landscaping, materials, and furniture.
- Examine ways in which an existing building can be modernized and enhanced to improve wayfinding, accessibility, and safety.
- Describe the equipment and infrastructure needed to support high school Physics, Chemistry, and Biology labs.
- Explore design strategies that improve occupant socio-emotional health such as daylight, operable windows, skylights, and access to the outdoors.
