Can You Weather the Storm?

Is the weather messing with your travel plans? Cold weather rolling through many parts of the country, particularly the Deep South where people aren't used to sub-freezing temperatures, forced children to spend the night at schools and stranded drivers on highways. A few inches of snow paralyzed a city. Could this happen elsewhere? As the country swings from a "polar vortex" to balmy February temperatures - not to mention the extreme hurricanes, tornadoes and fires that are recent memories in some regions – our buildings need to be resilient, and our schools have an important role to play in planning for community resilience.

Join us for a dialogue about the role of schools in community resiliency. Natural and man-made disasters will continue to hit our schools and communities. Schools serve as community refuges and house our most precious commodity – our children.

Plan, prepare and mitigate: Schools and communities must be better prepared to withstand catastrophic events. The cost of urban disasters in 2011 alone was estimated at over $138 billion. Join us as we explore community-wide approaches and procedures in planning for disaster and robust recovery.
