King Career Center

Anchorage, AK 99508 |
The Alaska Chapter will convene its annual conference at the King Career Center in Anchorage, Dec. 4-5, 2014. This is a very special time to gather architects, educators, school planners, engineers, and facility maintenance experts to share our common interest of making Alaska’s schools effective places to learn.
The conference will feature Trillium Creek Elementary School near Portland, OR. Trillium Creek is the recent recipient of the 2014 MacConnell Award, a distinction that recognizes exceptional planning and design work that results in a model school for contemporary learning and teaching. The presenters from Trillium Creek will be the project’s architect, school principal, and one of the teachers. Conference attendees will learn about the unique aspects of the school’s design that support the community of learners and teachers. The school principal will share insights about growing a new professional culture within the staff and administration that allowed the school design to be fully realized for its many diverse uses.
The conference will open with a keynote address from Alaska’s Teacher of the Year, Denise Lisac. A variety of relevant school planning topics will be explored such as Career & Technical Education programs, and design of Physical Education & athletic facilities. There will be a session about the Alaska Dept of Education & Early Development’s new CIP funding application, and our technical sessions will include lighting retrofit strategies, M/E control systems, and exterior building wall systems. The conference will conclude with a tour of the new UAA Alaska Airlines Sports Center. There will also be a trade show with our industry partners to show you the latest building products and help troubleshoot your specific product challenges.
Whether you are a long time member, or you are new to the Association for Learning Environments, or you are simply interested in learning something new about Alaska’s schools, I hope you will join us as we explore Growing Our Future together!
