Relevance: Designing Schools That Inspire Teachers, Engage Students & Embrace Communities
The Saratoga Hilton, Saratoga Springs, NY

As a leader in the field of educational facilities, you are invited to participate in the annual Northeast Region Exhibition of School Planning & Architecture.

Schools are more effective and caring places when they provide an inviting, comfortable, technology rich, and safe environment to the learner; recognizing that the learning environment has no boundaries. This collaborative educational planning approach at the intersection of architecture and engineering with learners, educators, and planners contributes to enhanced academic performance, fewer discipline problems, higher staff morale, and improved use of resources.

Multiple projects may be recognized as an award-winning educational facility. The jury will award projects that meet the criteria and stand out as exceptional and inspiring. The Edward Kirkbride Award may be given to a project that exhibits exceptional strength in each of the judging criteria. Each award winning project will be specially recognized at the conference award ceremony, distinguished in the exhibition, and promoted on the Northeast Region website and newsletter.

We require a two-panel minimum per project for display. The first two panels are included in the basic entry fee. Every panel thereafter and this may span multiple projects, will be an additional fee.

The jury considers how well the project satisfies its own planning and design intent. Any project designed by firms in the Northeast Region, or projects constructed within the Northeast Region that were designed by firms from outside of the Northeast Region, and have been completed within the last 5 years can be submitted for review. The evaluation considers both the written narrative and the planning and design responses in four areas, with the heaviest weighting on the learning environment.

  • Reflects the desired learning program
  • Supports a variety of Learning styles and methods for delivering instruction
  • Supports a "Learning anytime, anywhere" philosophy

  • Supports the learning environment/activities
  • Demonstrates sustainability
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of materials, systems and other building elements
  • Relates to the existing site and the greater environment
  • Inspires both internally and externally
  • Successfully achieves the Vision and Goals.
Community Environment & Planning Process:
Define and describe the process used in the planning of this facility including:
  • Who was involved in the process
  • How did the process engage the community and affect the learning environment
  • How did the Planning Team take advantage of the assets available within the community
  • What methods were used throughout the process to ensure the final environment would align with the Vision and Goals set during the planning phase
  • Include a timeline of the planning process and a list of participants.
Applicability to Conference Theme:
Define and describe how the submission is applicable to the conference theme including:
  • The employment of technical advances in architecture and engineering
  • The use of technology, furniture, and/or an existing building as a catalyst for transformation
