School Tour #1: Uptown Tour

  1. The Bronx Charter School for the Arts
    950 Longfellow Avenue
    Bronx, NY 10474

    Tour consists of:
Ground floor and basement, about 25,000 sf. The tour will address curriculum background, how the designers compensated for the spatial challenges, and the intensive process of participatory design and connection to the community that is a hallmark of this project. If time permits, we may spend 10 minutes or so on a bus tour of this industrial neighborhood to get an understanding of urban context and possibly visit the sister project community center nearby as both buildings are used in conjunction. The school will be in session and we should be able to experience the space as it is commonly used.

  2. Spitzer School of Architecture
    Shepard Hall
    140th Street and Convent Ave.

    Tour consists of:
We will start at Shepard Hall by way of providing context for this eclectic campus. Shepard Hall is a wonderful George Post building in the heart of the campus quad. Once at Spitzer we will orient at the main floor, then go directly up to the roof terrace to enjoy the views (hopefully a nice day), then wind our way down through the atrium stopping off at several teaching studios, the auditorium, the library, the model shop and the J Max Bond Center, engaged in local and regional design outreach.

School Tour #2: Downtown Tour

  1. Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School
    35-12 35th Avenue
    New York, NY

Founded by Tony Bennett, this new 1,000-student public high school, whose curriculum emphasizes the visual and performing arts, is designed to celebrate the arts, encourage interaction among different artistic disciplines and create a school that visually, spatially and programmatically establishes an artistic dialogue with its surrounding Queens community. The tour will begin in the multi-story lobby atrium, which cuts through the building to illuminate interior spaces and highlight the oval form of the Tony Bennett Concert Hall at the center of the building. It will continue on with classrooms, studio and rehearsal spaces framing the perimeter of the central atrium space on each floor and culminate with the rooftop courtyard gathering/performance space.
