Welcome to the 2022 Midwest Great Lakes Regional Conference!

Education gives us the knowledge and experience of the world around us and changes it into something better. It offers us a perspective on how to look and experience life. As education continues to evolve to meet the demands of shifting generations, engaging and immersive experiences are being leveraged to prepare learners for life’s next steps. Educators are working to create personalized approaches for each student while fostering collaboration and connections between peers. The traditional 4 walls of the classroom are being challenged and designers have the opportunity to create space as a supportive tool for learning. Focusing on a strong understanding of the student experience and designing with empathy allows for school planning to be driven by a focus on the future of learning, while still supporting capital needs, growth and other logistical considerations of school systems.

The 2022 Midwest Great Lakes Conference Theme – “Instruction Before Construction” is built on exploring the transformative approach to education and the learning environment, along with how the future growth and flexibility in schools can be reimagined to support it. Our goal is to foster conversation on the innovative approaches educators are taking to transforming the learning experience for future generations of children, and how the built environment can act as an important resource to support their efforts. The way in which design solutions are developed and defined is crucial. An effective way for architects and educators to work together is a hands-on experience; creating simple models and developing shared ideas and an understanding of how future learning spaces could look and function. The A4LE KC Chapter and the Board are inspired by the quarterly conversations that have taken place over the last few years, focused on this educational transformation.  We look forward to engaging the entire region in these conversations at the 2022 Midwest Great Lakes Regional Conference.
