Del Valle ISD
Smith Elementary School Replacement

Join us for lunch and a presentation of Smith Elementary School. Tour to follow.
This program is a case study of the new Smith Elementary School which replaces a 50 year old campus that was constructed in many phases. The new campus overcame many challenges including a tight site with a single-story design, preserving and enhancing campus culture, designing for every learner, and maintaining a safe space for students throughout construction. See the new vision Del Valle ISD has for the future of education.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand how the team approached designing for different learning styles to better serve students with varying needs.
- This campus was built on an active campus. Learn how the team designed and constructed with student health and safety in mind.
- Learn how the planning preserved aspects of the campus the community was proud of and made students and educators feel valued and important through the new building design.
- Understand the planning process to design one school on two very different sites. See how the team expanded the campus by connecting it to an adjacent middle school and incorporating a child development center on the same site.
Facilitators:
- Josh Mayfield, American Constructors
- Heather Rule, Project Architect, Pfluger
- Steven Alves, Executive Director of Maintenance, Transportation, and Construction, Del Valle ISD
- Tony Plascencia, Project Designer, Pfluger
- Jessica Molter, Managing Principal, Pfluger

A Hands-on Approach: Designing to Support Engagement and Social Learning
Come join us virtually for lunch for our regular monthly meeting. This month our program will consist of a presentation about the San Marcos CISD High School CTE by Perkins & Will. It will include a presentation, active discussion, Q&A, and a facility tour.
Now that students are learning and using the new San Marcos CISD High School Career and Technology Center, follow us through this case study to discover the vision that the SMCISD leadership worked towards. Our focus during this presentation will dive into how the outdoor and indoor learning spaces, are making a difference with today’s learners approach to schooling. The types of spaces that were created are created for not just one type of learner, but for Visual, Aural, Physical, Social, and Logical learners.

2021 Construction Cost Outlook for Central Texas Schools
This program will bring together a diverse group of Contractors, Cost Estimators, and Facilities Directors to discuss the 2021 Construction Cost Outlook. The pandemic of 2020 had a significant effect on school district construction projects – all of which had safety and cost impacts for districts throughout Central Texas. As essential works, GCs and construction works continued to work while others were in lock down. During this time and the 9 months since, contractors, program managers, and district facilities representatives have learned many lessons.
This panel aims to explore the myriad of cost impacts felt during the pandemic on material sourcing, supply chain, labor, safety, scheduling, and other logistics on site. After reviewing the trends observed, we will discuss the trends predicted in order to inform more efficient, leaner, and more proactive drawings / specs to eventually afford school districts with more economic and functional value.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify trends for cost impacts observed during and expect as a result of the pandemic relative to material sourcing and supply chain issues.
- Explore the impacts of labor-related pandemic issues that affect construction cost, scheduling, and risk management, including site safety measures (social distancing & disinfection), virus infection, contract tracing, and anticipated effects of immunization.
- Investigate Risk Management issues for school construction projects magnified during the pandemic and explore innovative mitigation techniques for A/E teams and contractors.
- Compare and contrast Design Build, CMR, and CSP delivery methods with regard to cost impacts during the pandemic to advance the best value to school ISD clients
