Tour 1: Spartanburg High School & Boiling Springs High School
Spartanburg High School – Spartanburg School District 7
Included in the new facility design are a 2500-seat multipurpose athletic arena, a 1000-seat full service performing arts
complex, a complete compliment of athletic fields, a trend-setting student center and cafeteria, and multiple outdoor
courtyards designed with the pedestrian in mind. All of these spaces are designed to operate exclusive of the school
schedule, so that the public can make use of the building for performances, conventions, and other events. A strong bond
with the surrounding neighborhoods and the district is a main factor in the programming of the high school.
Boiling Springs High School
- The new Boiling Springs High School is designed for 10th-12th grade to replace a 1975-76 school originally designed as a middle school but opened as the Boiling Springs High school with multiple additions during construction.
- The new facility features three –two story classroom wings, cafeteria and coffee shop, Auditorium, Fine Arts wing and two story media center at the heart of the campus, a new baseball/softball complex, tennis courts and football field house.
- The site for the new school, adjacent to the existing Boiling Springs High School, takes advantage of the topography to create a lower level arena type competition gymnasium and a gently sloping secure courtyard that extends the teaching environment to the exterior of the building.
- Existing parking and drives are revised to incorporate a new Bulldog Nation Legacy Plaza and covered canopy, to connect the existing campus that is currently being renovated for the Boiling Springs Freshman Academy (opening Fall of 2020).
- The new Boiling Springs High School together with the renovated Freshman Academy, will provide a 2500 student population with the Spartanburg School District 2’s objective to provide “caring, collaborative and creative environments” needed to meet a primary goal; that is to ensure students obtain “Skill sets including: creativity and Innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration and teamwork”.
Tour 2: Fairforest Middle School & Drayton Elementary School
Fairforest Middle School – Spartanburg School District 6
Fairforest Middle School is a new facility replacing the old middle school in Fairforest, SC. The facility serves 1,100 students and provides a STEM based curriculum for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. The 225,000 SF two-story building features three grade level communities designed around three learning commons; a cafeteria with a platform, a gymnasium, and a planetarium. The 100-seat planetarium has a 40’-wide dome and features a Spitz SciDome IQ 4K laser projection system with 3D-movie capabilities. A 15’-diameter observatory on site houses a telescope that can shoot live video feed into the planetarium. The planetarium is not limited to astronomy use only, but also available for science and social studies presentations, and district-wide use. The project was completed in 2019.
Drayton Mills Elementary School – Spartanburg School District 7
As a STEM-based school, technology is ever-present throughout the building. From the large screens in the main lobby and throughout the corridors to the comprehensive wireless network, the facility is designed to accommodate today’s highest standards and adapt easily to future changes. Based on the same design trends seen in many of the most successful contemporary schools across the nation, the classrooms are designed to work as “neighborhoods” within each grade. Each of these areas also has its own dedicated collaborative workspace to enhance the ideas of teamwork and cohesion. The open-plan classrooms and extracurricular spaces address critically important issues like daylighting and visual access, reinforcing a sense of lightness and levity in the learning environment. Within the new school, each grade collaborates in group Innovation Hubs. These areas are designed to encourage individual classrooms to combine in a participatory “learning neighborhood” environment and stimulate multi-disciplinary interactions.
