The Association for Learning Environments (A4LE) is committed to addressing the entrenched systemic inequities
that have long permeated our professions, learning environments, and society. We recognize that organizations are
stronger and more effective when they truly reflect the diverse populations they serve. A Justice, Equity, Diversity,
and Inclusion Committee has been established to provide leadership in furthering justice, equity, diversity, and
inclusion (JEDI) for all A4LE members and communities we serve. The ultimate goal is to create better learning
experiences, better learning environments, and a better world.
The purpose of the Committee is to ensure that every A4LE member and community we serve are provided the
opportunity to participate, share, and obtain the tools and knowledge necessary to understand the importance,
value, and benefits of a diverse and equitable Association at the chapter, regional, national, and global levels;
identify ways that we can take meaningful action; and foster and implement changes and opportunities for all
involved in education.
Areas of Focus
This Committee will examine and provide support for the following as they pertain to JEDI: a forum for discussion
and information of a diverse range of voices, ideas, and experiences; resources for members and constituents;
research; training for members; planning and design; the A4LE organization and its constituent professions;
legislation and governance; pathways to the profession; and others as arise that are relevant to JEDI, including
Structure and Membership
This Committee will act in the role of support, liaison, and coordination among similar committees at the regional
and chapter levels. The Committees will be inclusive of the broadest possible spectrum of those who, by status or
self-identification, represent different ethnicities and races, cultures, genders, sexual orientation, familial status,
socio-economic status, development, geography, age, ability and other relevant traits or groups. The Committees
will be based on anti-hierarchical, collaborative, and ground-up principles and initiatives; will actively seek,
encourage, and support representation and participation from each region and chapter, and the communities we
serve; and will seek to integrate and support the A4LE Mission and Strategic Plan; and will be flexible to respond to
changing membership and needs.
The Committee will recognize that its mission and focus may change over time, and none of the criteria in this
charter are intended to be limiting in that effort.
