Welcome

The evolving theme for the 2018 joint Spring Conference in Baltimore is "Building Community through Education". After all, what is the purpose of education if not to create productive, healthy, and engaged community members? From the marble steps in urban neighborhoods that Baltimore is known for to the rolling suburban fields, the Baltimore metropolitan area has a wide range of communities. Though they all call Maryland their home, each community has its own unique set of needs, history, and sense of place.

As we pursue seminar topics, the theme will be forefront and topics will be selected that align closely with the theme. We are looking for more than just case studies on excellent facilities, but projects and concepts that look at the much bigger picture somehow include, relate to, create, or build community.

We are looking for proposals that look at the much bigger picture and somehow include, relate to, create, or build community. Some ideas might include:

  • What state and local policies enable the creation of effective communities through education?
  • What planning processes, tools, & techniques ensure that the link between education, community, and architecture is reinforced?
  • What academic and/or anecdotal research supports the link between education, community, and architecture?
  • How schools can be influenced and can influence their neighborhood.
  • Mixed use, community center, health center, multiple age, multiple education levels.
  • Multi-use, shared use.
  • Educational Facilities as part of an urban environment.
  • Life-long learning.
  • Building that ties together a campus or brings together a community.
  • "Community" college.
  • Libraries.
  • Museums.
  • Camps.
  • Theaters.
  • Recreation facilities.
  • Social justice. Can architects make a difference?
