The Katrina/Rita Task Force

When A4LE members joined forces to assist the affected school districts in need in the Gulf Coast Area of the United States, nobody knew where to begin, as devastation of this magnitude is not commonplace in the United States.

So, through the tireless efforts of the Katrina/Rita Task Force leader, Chris Pellegrin, AIA, a charge and a plan was developed. Some of the key initiatives of the task force included:

  • Created database of affected districts
  • Identified and recruited member volunteers
  • Contacted and visited affected districts, delivering copies of A4LE's Planning Guide
  • Adopted a District – St. Bernard Parish Public Schools

A4LE Task Force members assisted the St. Bernard Parish Public Schools in three (3) workshops where facility assessments, cost estimates, and capacity and utilization studies were completed. The last effort helped identify the needs for Lacoste Elementary School, the Paragon Project of the A4LE Foundation and Charitable Trust.

From the experiences and lessons learned in those efforts, and in keeping with the original charge to provide assistance, this guide was developed. Work on the guide took several months to complete, highlighted by two (2) planning sessions in Dallas, Texas where the entire content and website design were developed.

We would like to thank the numerous volunteers that provided assistance, support and countless man hours to help achieve the goals of the Task Force, and that had a part in the development of this guide. In addition, we would like to thank the Administration (and good friends) at St. Bernard Parish Public Schools, whose story touched us, and whose perseverance and persistence inspired us.

In addition, the effectiveness of a team is directly related to the individual tasked with the leadership role. Our success is due to the leadership of Chris Pellegrin, AIA. Thank you for your tireless commitment, your focused direction, your passion and your leadership.

Many thanks go to the following organizations and volunteers:
